CEO's Update

Welcome to the Easter newsletter. It is fantastic to be able to share with you some of the amazing things that have been happening this term in our academies. The term has not been without its ups and downs, with Covid-19 continuing to see absences of staff and students, but through a flexible approach and some remote learning we have managed to keep going in some shape form or manner.

We are working hard with all students, and especially those who are taking examinations this summer to support them in preparing for these both academically and with regards to resilience and mind-set.

The news articles and stories in our newsletter are testament to the determination of everyone in the Trust not to let this virus determine our futures and of the broad and varied opportunities and achievements our young people have had.

Principal's Update

Happy Easter! It has been a strange spring term at Coritani, not helped by our first closure during the Covid pandemic. Thank you all once again for your efforts in online working while we made sure that everyone was able to safely return to the Academy.

Within this newsletter you will find details of some of the things our incredible learners have been doing over the last term including our first ever Coritani Mindset sessions for parents.

Success at Coritani doesn't happen on it's own, we can only achieve it if staff, parents and learners all work hard together. Thank you for the huge part you play in this.

As the summer term rolls in, it will be time for our Year 11 learners to take their GCSEs and for our first ever cohort of learners taking Key Stage 2 tests, we wish them well of course, but we don't need to wait for results, we already know they are awesome.

Have a fabulous break and we will see you back again on the 25th April.

PSHE Education in Action

As part of a KS4 PSHE lesson that discussed social anxiety, students were asked to design a poster to show how social anxiety might feel for young people. Harry’s image was particularly powerful and so Coritani contacted the national charity Anxiety UK to see if they would be interested in the artwork for publishing online or in their magazine.

The charity was so impressed with the work Harry had created and said they would love to publish it in the spring issue of Anxious Times alongside a main feature ‘Art for Anxiety Relief’.

Coritani Mindset for Parents

A big thank you to our families for attending our recent autism workshop here at Coritani. It was a great opportunity to gain valuable knowledge around autism as well as a chance to meet other parents within our community.

Our programme of working together with the mental health team is enabling us to support our students both at home and school. We know this partnership will add to our successes and ultimately benefit our young people.

Thank you all for sharing your personal experiences after listening to our presentation and please look out for further dates. Our anxiety workshop is scheduled for 31st March and the Thrive workshop is planned for the 5th May.

An Oscar awaits

This term in Film Studies, Harry has created a short opening to a horror film called the ‘Beheadteacher’. His film is about a ‘Headteacher’ who terrorises his pupils and staff in creative ways throughout the school day.

Harry was like a modern day Alfred Hitchcock, with his expertly filmed horror film, with high knowledge of angles, camera shots and movement. A great team effort from Coritani staff and students to help Harry create the 2023 Oscar winner for Best Live Action Short Film - remember to thank us all Harry in your acceptance speech!

A Note on Class Dojo

The Coritani community of parents, children and teachers all come together on a free app download called Class Dojo. Dojo (as it is affectionally referred to by most people) allows you to view photo and video stories of the work students are doing in school as well as allowing teachers and parents to communicate with each other.

Pictures and stories on the app are private and can only be viewed by the staff and parents linked to the Academy/acccount.

We are always striving to improve how we use Dojo so if there is anything else you would like to see on there please let us know.

Ready for Food

KS2 Food and Nutrition lessons are always a hive of activity and a subject all learners are excited to be involved in. Each week learners are introduced to new recipes that help them think about healthy and nutritious meals. Here learners are making a healthy fruit and veg couscous snack, prepared using a wide selection of different ingredients.

Part of being safe in lessons is learning about why we need to wash our hands before we start preparing food and at points within the lesson. Learners also gain essential life skills such as being safe in the kitchen, how to use kitchen equipment safely and most importantly how to keep the kitchen clean, being respectful for the next learners to use the food room.

Respecting Language

In Juniors, we have been trying to improve our oracy and reading skills. Our language lessons are helping us to do this. We have been using a new and exciting web-platform called Lyfta. Lyfta uses videos from around the world to help us learn how other people live their lives.

We’ve been introduced to Erban in Turkey, who feeds stray dogs and ensures their safety. Also, Michael in Helsinki, who wanted to be an ice hockey player, but ended up being a ballet dancer and we’ve met Enaney in Awra Amba in Ethiopia, who is a tour guide and helped to build a community medical centre.

Our language lessons allow us to talk about the subject and this helps us understand things before we read related texts. We also get to learn about people and things from around our amazing world.
